Hiring Range

$60000 - $80000

About this Position

The Lab Manager will oversee the operations of the Excelsior lab at the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education supporting engineering projects and research initiatives. This role includes the management of lab resources, equipment maintenance, safety compliance, and direct involvement in running machinery to support academic and industry-focused projects. The Lab Manager will work closely with faculty, students, and staff to facilitate research and educational activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the Excelsior lab.
  • Maintain an organized and efficient workspace, including inventory management of tools, materials, and supplies.
  • Develop and enforce lab policies and procedures to promote safety, efficiency, and compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Operate and maintain advanced engineering machinery, including but not limited to CNC machines, 3D printers, and testing equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of all lab equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment as necessary, coordinating with external vendors as needed.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for lab safety protocols.
  • Train lab users on proper equipment operation and safety practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Provide technical assistance to faculty, researchers, and students working on engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with project teams to fabricate prototypes, test designs, and analyze results.
  • Stay updated on new technologies and methodologies to support cutting-edge research.
  • Manage lab budgets and assist with the procurement of equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate lab scheduling to ensure equitable access for all users.
  • Document and report on lab usage, incidents, and equipment status.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Three years of related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Materials Science, Engineering, or any related field
  • Five - seven years of professional work experience in a related field.

    Experience managing a laboratory or workshop in an academic or research setting.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
    • Proficiency in operating and maintaining engineering machinery and tools.
    • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices for lab environments.
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively in a dynamic environment.
    • Experience with CAD software and rapid prototyping technologies.
    • Familiarity with university research processes and collaborations.
    • Certification in lab safety or hazardous materials handling.
