About this Position

This position involves supervising and performing general and preventive maintenance, repairs, and renovations on all Lake Carl Blackwell grounds. Responsibilities include the installation, maintenance, and repair of carpentry, minor construction, painting, plumbing tasks, as well as any other activities necessary to maintain the safety and appearance of the grounds. The role also requires the safe operation of power equipment, including lawn mowers, weed eaters, small tractors, chainsaws, and hand tools.

Additional responsibilities include inspecting and diagnosing issues, performing scheduled route maintenance, and assisting with the scheduling of preventive and predictive maintenance for equipment and vehicles. The position requires maintaining an equipment and tool log in collaboration with the department manager and supervisor. The position may assist with daily cleaning of public restrooms, removing human waste from portable toilets using pumping units, cleaning shower houses, and disposing of trash from around the lake area when needed. This position also supports the training of other employees on procedures and effectively communicates management's standards and expectations, ensuring assigned tasks get completed on time.

The role requires working outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions. It involves operating machinery with potentially hazardous noise levels and moving parts. Frequent, strenuous physical activity is necessary, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, carrying, and lifting. The position involves heavy manual labor, demanding the physical ability to frequently lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds. Appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, must be used as required; these items are provided for purposes beyond personal use.

Employees may be required to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and during periods when the University is closed, as deemed necessary by management to complete projects or address emergencies.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Building Maintenance Mechanic I - two years' experience in a building trade; or the equivalent of 600 hours Vocational/Technical education in a related building trade field.

    Building Maintenance Mechanic II - three years of prior successful work experience in a building trade; or the equivalent of 600 hours Vocational/Technical education in a related building trade field plus one (1) year of prior successful work experience in a building trade.

    Building Maintenance Mechanic III - four years of prior successful work experience in a building trade; or the equivalent of 600 hours Vocational/Technical education in a related building trade field plus two (2) years of prior successful work experience in a building trade.

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    A valid Driver’s License must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of the job duties as assigned.

    Ability to operate small engine equipment.

    Building Maintenance Mechanic III - Apprentice license in mechanical, electrical, or plumbing required.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Ability to follow directions and use appropriate safety measures for tools and equipment used to perform tasks.

    Ability to effectively use ground maintenance tools and the ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

    This position requires frequent strenuous physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, carrying, and lifting (up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally).

    It also requires working outdoors and tolerating extreme temperatures and weather.

    Broad general mechanical/electrical/electronic background.

    Ability to become proficient in the use of Aim Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of grounds/maintenance experience preferred.
