About this Position

Manages and coordinates activities of transit operations to provide passengers with fast, efficient, and safe transportation. Acts as an advisor and assistant to the Transit Manager on matters concerning transit operations. Responsible for assisting with state and federal grant applications and compliance. Designated Employee Representative (DER) for the department’s drug and alcohol testing program. Work involves coordinating bus operations activity through assigning, scheduling, and dispatching bus operators and vehicles to fixed and demand-response routes. Coordinate field activities using communication equipment and direct field supervision. Work includes checking operator availability, assigning operators to vehicles, directing operators to route changes, and providing on-site field supervision. Manage the work schedule of 40-49 employees. Work within the scope of established departmental rules, regulations, and procedures, exercising independent judgment and discretion in coordinating efforts to resolve field problems. Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new route operators. Recommends route changes to the Director or the Transit Manager. Responds promptly and courteously to customer complaints. Maintains weekly ridership records. A working personal cell phone is mandatory. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and be able to lift 50 pounds. This is a safety-sensitive position and, as required by USDOT, "Safety-Sensitive employees must meet the requirements of 49 CFR Part 40 (Drug and Alcohol Regulations)."

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
    • Five years of transit experience, including two years of supervisory experience

Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

  • Must possess a CDL Class B license with Passenger (P) endorsement
  • Air-brake endorsement required for Transit Supervisors only

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

  • Ability to operate a personal computer
  • Ability to communicate using a two-way radio
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of the operational characteristics of passenger buses
  • Knowledge of the city's arterial and secondary road network
  • Strong mechanical knowledge
  • Knowledge of transit operations
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
