About this Position

Nature of Job: The ideal candidate will provide individual and group counseling to students with a wide variety of psychological, emotional and developmental concerns in accordance with American Counseling Association professional and ethical standards including providing crisis intervention services.  In this role, the Wellness Counselor will report directly to the Dean of Students.  Candidates must serve as a resource and consultant to the campus community, parents and others as appropriate, on issues relating to student mental health issues and problems affecting all students.  The candidate must have experience with emergency psychological care and/or mental health and behavioral intervention strategies. Candidates must have the vision to plan and execute sustainable emotional and physical health awareness programs for the campus.  Some weekend and evening time commitments will be required.  ​

The Counselor at Langston University should have a strong commitment to:​

  • Developing, coordinating, and facilitating outreach services -- oral presentations, guest lectures, workshops, and special events;​
  • Conducting initial assessments and actively engaging students, with varying developmental, emotional, and psychological problems, in the development of intervention goals and action plans;​
  • Providing individual and group counseling services, as well as crisis management for students on a(n) drop-in, appointment, and/or referral basis;​
  • Developing and demonstrating multicultural competency and sensitivity, while working with a culturally and socio-economically diverse student population;​
  • Implementing effective and efficient organizational and record-keeping skills;​
  • Consistently demonstrating professionalism while working cooperatively and collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external community partners;​
  • Working collaboratively with University police officers to assess recurring behavioral issues;​
  • Appropriately utilizing social media and technology to communicate with University constituents;​
  • Attending departmental, divisional, and committee meetings; New-Student and Parent Orientation sessions, and other pertinent campus events;​
  • Promoting visibility, availability, and accessibility of counseling services;​
  • Advancing the mission and goals of the Counseling Center, the Division of Student Affairs, and Langston University, through innovation and strategic planning.​
  • Operating with a s, results-oriented philosophy;​

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in Counselor Education: Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field is required.
    (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of counseling experience in a college or university setting are preferred.  

Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

  • Licensure in Oklahoma (or eligibility for licensure within one year)
