This position is for a full-time, veterinary technician in the Small Animal Primary Care unit in the Oklahoma State University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (OSU VMTH). Successful candidates will have a passion for veterinary care and possess exceptional communication skills. Candidates will have the opportunity to actively participate in one-on-one training of veterinary students, interns and residents, as well as work alongside DVMs to provide clients and patients with the highest standard of care. Employment is contingent upon successful pre-employment criminal background investigation. Must comply with mandatory rabies pre-exposure vaccine program and other university occupational health requirements. Individuals will be required to enroll with the Institution Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and successfully complete mandatory IACUC training during the first six months of employment.
The OSU VMTH is a 145,000 square foot, full-service veterinary teaching hospital providing care for all domestic and selected exotic and wildlife species.
Veterinary Assistant - High school/GED with two years’ experience.
Veterinary Technician I - Registered Veterinary Technician or completed associate degree in veterinary technology and will sit for the Oklahoma State Board of Examiner's technician certifying exam and obtain licensure within 120 days of hire.
Veterinary Technician II - Three years' experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice.
Veterinary Technician III - Six years' experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice.
Senior Veterinary Technician - Eight years' experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice with greater than one year experience within a specific specialty.
Veterinary Technician Specialist I - Registered Veterinary Technician. Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition.
Veterinary Technician Specialist II - Must meet all requirements of Veterinary Technician Specialist I. Five years of experience as Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition.
Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
Experience in restraint of small and large animals, administering injections, and placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters is essential. Must have knowledge of equipment used within VTH including, but not limited to: personal computer, telephone, copy machine, camera/video camera, diagnostic lab equipment, electrodiagnostic equipment, laser, video endoscope, surgical preparation, aseptic techniques, etc. Must be physically capable of lifting animals weighing 50 pounds or greater onto exam tables and into elevated cages. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as organizational skills. Must be self-motivated and capable of accomplishing tasks with minimal oversight or supervision. Willingness to work with equine patients, and other large animal or exotic species as needed based on dermatology service case load.
Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition; or ten years experience as a Veterinary Technician II or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) recognized by NAVTA, including but not limited to VTS-Dermatology.
