About this Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital at Oklahoma State University is seeking an enthusiastic person to join the anesthesia team. Successful candidate will provide clinical assistance to professional staff. Candidates will have the opportunity to actively participate in one-on-one training of veterinary students, as well as work alongside veterinary specialists to provide clients and patients with the highest standard of care.

This is a full-time position. Every full-time employee receives a full benefits package. The VTH is a 145,000 square foot, full-service veterinary teaching hospital providing 24-hour care for all domestic and selected exotic and wildlife species. The VTH admits more than 15,500 clinical cases per year and hospitalizes 5-8 ICU cases per day. Our hospital is equipped with digital radiography, MRI, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, 24-hour access to full clinical pathology lab, oxygen cages, pulse oximetry, capnography, I-Stat point-of-care testing, telemetry, blood pressure and central venous pressure monitoring, Pleur-Evac® suction units, and ventilator therapy. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to interact with veterinary specialists, as well as a supportive group of interns and residents. This position is in the anesthesia area of the hospital.

As a member of the anesthesia technician team, this individual will provide anesthesia and sedation to patients undergoing various procedures/diagnostics in the OSU Veterinary Medical Hospital and will teach and supervise senior veterinary students in clinical anesthesia (large and small animals). This individual will rotate with the other team members to provide after hour anesthesia emergency on-call duty for both large and small animal cases (including week nights, weekends, and holidays).

Responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization of the anesthesia induction areas and equipment, responsible for supplies inventory and anesthesia equipment maintenance. Management of the service is provided by two board certified anesthesiologists. This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally. Promotional opportunities may be available through the established career development plan for anesthesia technicians.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Two years related experience; or Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program with two years related experience; or Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences or related area; or DVM degree or equivalent.  

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge: Experience in animal restraint, administering injections, and placement of peripheral IV catheters is essential. Knowledge of basic pharmacology and physiology, calculating drug dosages and rates, administering anesthesia, assessing patient monitoring and addressing changes in patient status under anesthesia and during recovery. Knowledge of equipment used in VMH including, but not limited to: anesthesia equipment, monitoring equipment, diagnostic lab equipment, personal computer, etc. This position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally. Must be physically capable of lifting animals weighing 50 pounds or greater onto exam tables and into elevated cages.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's
  • Five years of experience as Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    RVT or specialist preferred but will consider assistants depending on experience; or will consider those with completed Associate Degree in Veterinary Technology and ability to sit for the Oklahoma State Board of Veterinary Examiner's technician certification exam within 120 days of hire.

    Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). Veterinary Technician Specialist (Anesthesia) recognized by NAVTA.
