This is an 11-month career-track, joint appointment in the departments of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership (AECL) and Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) at Oklahoma State University at the rank of Instructor or Teaching Assistant Professor, depending on earned degree. This position is a full-time, 11-month appointment funded 100% Instruction with a salary commensurate with qualifications. The start date is negotiable.
The successful candidate will support the academic programs in both the AECL and BAE departments through classroom instruction, certification training, mentorship, and professional development. The candidate will be expected to support both school-based teacher preparation courses and student teacher supervision in agricultural education. The individual will be expected to coordinate and teach the mechanization teaching modules associated with service courses provided through BAE for students in a variety of programs in and outside the Ferguson College of Agriculture. These courses include, but are not limited to, AST 3222 (Metals and Welding) and AST 3011 (Ag Structures), AST 3021 (Engines and Power), and AST 4101 (Ag Electrification). Instruction will require a hands-on teaching approach in a laboratory intensive curriculum and coordination of teaching modules with BAE service courses involving metals and welding, field work skills, fabrication and construction, lab management, agricultural electrification, small engines, surveying, and agricultural structures. As part of instruction, it will be critical to ensure adequate technical skills associated with the certification program tied to school-based agricultural education teachers, while also providing a level of knowledge consistent with a university-based education. Because the AECL Department hosts pre-service teacher training and in-service teacher institutes related to the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE), the successful applicant will be expected to receive certification in a variety of CASE courses related to agricultural mechanization. Examples include, but are not limited to, Agricultural Power and Technology, Small Gas Engines, and Ag Equipment Maintenance and Technology.
In addition to teaching courses, the successful applicant will recruit and mentor undergraduate students (with the possibility of mentoring graduate students pending degree and experience), supervise teaching assistants, engage in student clubs and organizations (i.e., local and national), and contribute to scholarship through innovative teaching methods/materials, curriculum development, external grants, and peer-reviewed publications. Fostering industry partnerships will be an integral part of program development. The individual also will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in AECL, BAE, and other units in the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DASNR) and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, as well as staff at the Department of Oklahoma Career and Technology Education.
It is desired that the candidate holds a Doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) in agricultural education, agricultural engineering, agricultural systems technology, biosystems engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline (all requirements for the degree must have been met prior to the start date). However, the successful candidate must have earned a master’s degree in one of the above degree fields. Expertise in mechanical shop and mechanization techniques, laboratory teaching methods, and production agriculture is desired. Experience with the school-based agricultural education curriculum and teacher certification processes are preferred. Candidates must have excellent speaking and writing skills, an ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate level, and a desire to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
Salary and benefits are competitive based on qualifications and experience. Retirement and long-term disability, medical, dental and life insurance programs are available to employees.
Continuation of this position is subject to performance, needs, and available funding.
