About this Position

Facilities Management is looking for an energetic, skilled sign maker to join our team. Tasks include but are not limited to operating computerized sign-making equipment, sign fabrication, sign installation, work scheduling, record keeping, and maintenance. You must be able to assist other preventative maintenance & Facilities Management personnel as needed. Incumbent is required to work emergencies &/or any other event after 5 pm. weekdays, weekends, & holidays. Overtime is required when needed. Some shift work is needed when work cannot be accomplished during regular hours, & when the Management staff deems it necessary. 

They must be able to perform snow and ice removal tasks and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management, regardless of the weather conditions. Some irregular and extra hours as needed for projects and emergencies.

Emergencies frequently involve difficult working conditions. This may require work during non-business hours, which include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and when the University is closed.

This individual must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are not for personal use and are provided by the department. Must be able to perform other assigned duties related to operations, maintenance, and renovations to buildings and equipment, such as preventive maintenance; light duty carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, and other miscellaneous repairs and maintenance activities; and respond to emergency and urgent work.

Chemical is rated hazardous in the work area. Plastic fumes or odor; machine noise; plastic, wood, and metal shavings are byproducts of production.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before the agreed-upon start date)
  • Signmaker I: High School/GED with one year of experience with sign manufacture, carpentry, computer, graphic arts or related experience.

    Signmaker II: High School/GED with three years of experience with sign manufacture, carpentry, computer, graphic arts, computer-aided design, or related experience.

    Signmaker III: High School/GED with four years of experience with sign manufacture, carpentry, computer, graphic arts, computer-aided design, or related experience.

    Senior Signmaker: High School/GED with six years of experience with the OSU sign shop and demonstrates leadership ability.

    Post-secondary may be substituted for experience; preference given to post-secondary education in plumbing.

    Candidate position placement is dependent upon years of experience and availability.

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    Candidate position placement is dependent upon years of experience and availability. Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver’s license. A valid driver’s license must be kept for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

    Senior Signmaker: Completion of FM Leadership Development Program

    Post-secondary may be substituted for experience; preference given to post-secondary education in plumbing.

     

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Computer knowledge; typing skills; carpentry skills; sign layout and composition; lettering techniques; graphic design skills; ability to read architectural floor plans. Ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Ability to become proficient in the use of "AiM" computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

    The person in this position frequently communicates with customers and coworkers who have inquiries about work and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

    This position regularly stands, bends, stoops, lifts above the shoulders, is heavy in manual labor, and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.

  • Vocational/Technical
  • High School/GED with three years' experience with sign manufacture, carpentry, computer, graphic arts, or related experience with two of those years in the building trades or technical field at a university, commercial, l or industrial building maintenance organization.
