About this Position
The Communication Department seeks a professional journalist to serve as an Adjunct Instructor. This individual will bring current news media experience into the classroom and guide students in creating polished news content across a variety of traditional and digital platforms while emphasizing industry standards, ethics, and newsroom workflows.

Duties
- Teach undergraduate-level courses in Broadcast Journalism. Courses may include but are not limited to the following: Introduction to Mass Media, Writing for Mass Media, News Writing, Public Relations, Layout & Design, Photography, Videography, Announcing, Radio Production, Television Production, Broadcast Writing, Broadcast Law, and Practicum.
- Provide real-world insight while training students in editorial and production processes across multiple platforms
- Supervise students in producing publishable content across multiple platforms for campus or external media outlets
- Collaborate with full-time faculty to align curriculum with industry trends
- Advise students on professional development, internships, and career pathways
- Instruct students on developing proficiency with necessary equipment and software applications as needed for the generation of content across various platforms.
- Assist with departmental efforts regarding recruitment and retention
- Facilitate workshops on highly specialized areas of Broadcast Journalism (e.g., covering trauma, mental health and the journalist)
- Guide students on understanding the art of storytelling as it unfolds in the real-world across multiple platforms.

Required Qualifications
- Master's
- Masters degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or a related field.
- (Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and commensurate experience in the news media industry will be considered.)
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in the news media industry
- 5+ years of professional newsroom experience, preferably at a daily or weekly publication
- On-set experience with directing, producing, or field reporting
- Familiarity with live broadcasting, podcasting, YouTube, social video formats, and mobile journalism
- Experience with digital publishing platforms (e.g., WordPress, InDesign, CMS systems)
- 3+ years of experience with teaching at the college level
Level of Experience

- Currently employed in the news media and/or journalism industry
- Deep understanding of ethical standards, sourcing, deadline management, and editorial decision-making
- Able to translate current industry workflows and expectations into a learning environment
- Comfortable mentoring students in both technical and editorial aspects of production across various platforms
Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
- Exemplified competence with production-related tools and equipment (e.g., cameras, microphones, lighting)
- Exhibited expertise with a variety of graphic design (e.g., InDesign), audio editing (e.g., Adobe Audition), and video editing (e.g., Adobe Premier, Final Cut Pro) software applications.
- Experience with teaching, training, or mentorship at the college level
- Demonstrated proficiency in news gathering, news writing, and AP style
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated passion for teaching and student success
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D./Ed.D.
- In related field of study
- Previous teaching at a collegiate level.
