The Oklahoma State University, College of Veterinary Medicine is accepting applications for a specialty internship in ophthalmology. This is a 12-month clinical program designed to provide advanced clinical training in ophthalmology and prepare the individual to be highly qualified and competitive for advancement in ophthalmology training. The ophthalmology service is a busy service that provides training in comparative ophthalmology. The ophthalmology service has an active small and large animal caseload; therefore, a strong interest in equine ophthalmology is expected by all applicants. The candidate will work under the supervision of a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. Emily McCool, with intermittent supervision from locum ophthalmologists. The ophthalmology service is also supported by two full-time ophthalmology technicians.
Program Expectations
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in clinical and laboratory instruction of veterinary students.
- Participate in clinical service to aid patients, clients, and referring veterinarians, including back-up for the small animal and large animal emergency services at the Boren Veterinary Medical Hospital.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
House officer rounds (journal club, histopathology rounds, and textbook or slide review) and House Officer Seminars are a part of the didactic training. Participation in a retrospective or prospective research project related to veterinary ophthalmology is encouraged.
EMERGENCY DUTY:
Emergency service responsibilities after hours, weekends, and holidays are provided by the small animal emergency and critical care service and their associated house officers. In general, the ophthalmology intern will provide back-up (not primary care) to the small animal emergency service, however, primary emergency care is expected for established ophthalmology patients. The ophthalmology intern will also provide care for ophthalmology-related large animal emergencies, in cooperation with a large animal resident/intern.
