About this Position

The Oklahoma State University (OSU) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking applications for Department Head of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS).

The Department Head is the chief executive officer of VCS. Responsibilities include supervision of faculty and interns/residents with clinical service assignments to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). The candidate reports to the Dean of the CVM and works closely with the VTH Director as well as other unit leaders to develop and implement the vision for the CVM.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Assume responsibility for the quality, effectiveness, and progress of the department concerning its missions of teaching, research and service, and promotion of outreach/extension with the understanding that VTH success hinges on VCS faculty productivity.

2. Working with the Veterinary Administrative Council (VAC) to implement the CVM vision plan.

3. Assume responsibility for formulating and implementing budgets for the department.

4. Review and update departmental policies and procedures as necessary.

5. Recommend appointment, reappointment, salary increases and adjustments, tenure, promotion, dismissal, and other personnel actions relating to members of the faculty and staff in the department.

6. Coordinate recruitment, appointment and appropriate orientation of new faculty members and staff. Establish and promote effectiveness of mentoring committees for new faculty members.

7. Prepare annual appraisal and development reports on academic personnel and meet with faculty and select staff members to discuss their career development and annual plans of work.

8. Assign or nominate faculty members for committee service within VCS, VTH, CVM, or OSU.

9. Coordinate effective departmental communication via regular faculty & staff meetings, town halls, and/or electronic communications.

10. Serve as voting member of the Hospital Advisory Council (HAC) and the Veterinary Administrative Council (VAC). Provide input to budget, policy and procedures, personnel decisions and strategic plans as they relate to advancement and success of the CVM.

11. Collaborate with CVM leaders, including academic department chairs, associate deans, directors, and service chiefs, to ensure effective delivery of outstanding patient/client-centered care and clinical training of professional students, interns and residents.

The successful candidate will have a DVM or equivalent degree, substantial leadership and organizational skills, and a commitment to equality of opportunity. Board certification in an area of specialization, a strong record of research and university instruction and qualifications consistent with the rank of Full Professor are preferred.
