Facilities Management is looking for an energetic, skilled carpenter to join our team. Work on a team to gain finer construction experience. Support Management with estimating & planning. Make basic general repairs to interior and exterior portions of campus buildings. Change out Knives, cutters, & blades to maintain shop equipment.
Tasks include but are not limited to demolition of existing areas & performing various building alterations & renovations. Key responsibilities involve laying out & constructing furniture such as cabinets, Picture frames, & bulletin boards; installing new doors & door jambs (both metal & wood); framing & constructing walls using materials like sheetrock, wood, masonry, & metal. Remodel & install cabinetry for various settings, assemble ceilings, & handle the installation of bulletin boards, coat racks, TV mounts, & monitors. Other duties include flooring repairs & installations, including carpet, tile, wood, & vinyl; installing countertops, windows, storm doors, & storm windows. Understand tools, remodeling, materials, & blueprints, interpreting schematic drawings, & address service-related issues. Must be able to communicate with supervisors. Provide detailed work scopes to management for review, & ensure projects run smoothly.
You must be able to assist other preventative maintenance & Facilities Management personnel as needed. Incumbent is required to work emergencies &/or any other event after 5 pm. weekdays, weekends, & holidays. Overtime is required when needed. Some shift work is needed when work cannot be accomplished during regular hours, & when the Management staff deems it necessary.
This position is required to participate in snow and ice removal & respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management, requiring the employee to come into work regardless of the weather conditions. Some irregular & extra hours as needed for projects & emergencies. Emergencies frequently involve difficult conditions. This may require work during non-business hours, which include evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, & when the university is closed.
Work may involve dust & dirt, high noise levels, smoke & noxious odors, low lighting levels, crowded spaces, insects, & extreme weather temperatures. Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, or high-lift equipment. Ability to lift, climb & maneuver 40ft ladders. This position is heavy in manual labor & requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently & in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.
Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and safety glasses, is provided for workplace use. Adherence to all safety requirements and the promotion of work safety are mandatory.
Carpenter I - Three years of prior work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential construction. Two years of post-secondary education may be substituted for experience; preference given to post-secondary education in the construction field, with two years of work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential carpentry.
Carpenter II - Four years of prior work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential construction. Two years of post-secondary education may be substituted for experience; preference given to post-secondary education in the construction field, with three years of work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential carpentry.
Carpenter III - Five years of prior work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential construction. Two years of post-secondary education may be substituted for experience; preference given to post-secondary education in the construction field, with four years of work experience in commercial, industrial, and/or residential carpentry.
Candidate position placement is dependent upon years of experience and availability. Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver’s license. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.
The person in this position frequently communicates with customers and coworkers who have inquiries about work and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Ability to lift, climb, and maneuver 40-foot ladders. Ability to become proficient in the use of “AiM” computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology. Must work safely and promote a safe environment. Highly developed powers of observation, good communication skills, ability to follow instructions closely, and ability to work with very little supervision.
Ability to access tight spaces to perform the job, pass a respiratory fit test, and wear a full face respirator for extended periods.
Climb and/or work from stairs, scaffold, etc, for extended periods.
This position regularly stands, bends, stoops, lifts above the shoulders, is heavy in manual labor, and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.
