About this Position

This position is responsible for performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on University, State, and Federal vehicles and equipment. Duties include test-driving automatic and manual transmission vehicles to diagnose concerns and verify completed repairs; performing routine preventive maintenance, such as fluid and filter changes, tire rotations, and system servicing; and repairing or replacing components within the fuel, brake, steering, suspension, drive train, electrical, and starting systems. The role also involves conducting inspections, replacing worn parts, ensuring compliance with established safety standards, maintaining accurate and legible maintenance documentation, recording meter readings, and keeping vehicles clean. A valid state driver’s license is required to conduct test drives.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Automotive Tech I -  Minimum of one (1) year of experience in automotive maintenance or repair, or completion of a recognized automotive technology training program.

    Automotive Tech II -  Five years of experience in automotive maintenance or repair, or completion of a recognized automotive technology training program.

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    Must be eligible for coverage under the State of Oklahoma Vehicle Liability Insurance program.

    During the probationary period and throughout employment, the employee must maintain a current, valid license with no suspensions or restrictions, except for corrective lenses as prescribed. Failure to maintain the required license or insurability may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

    Automotive Tech I  - Within three years of position acceptance, and at a minimum rate of one certification per year, must acquire Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in: Car & Light Truck, Brakes, Steering & Suspension, and Air Conditioning & Heating. 

    Automotive Tech II - Must possess and maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Certification. 

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:
    • Knowledge of automotive systems and repair methods.

    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and service documentation.

    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

    • Ability to maintain accurate service records.

    • Must possess mechanical aptitude related to automotive mechanical theory and operation.
    • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Windows, including Word and Excel. 
    • Must learn to proficiently operate Squarerigger Fleet Maintenance Software within the hiring probationary period. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational/Technical
    • Completion of a vocational or technical program in automotive technology.

    • Prior experience in a fleet, government, university, or institutional maintenance environment.

    • Current or partial Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

    • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or work order systems.

    • Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and safety compliance standards.

    • Ability to work with a variety of hand and power tools used in automotive repair.
