Work Schedule

The work schedule for this position is Friday through Tuesday, with Wednesdays and Thursday off. Shift is 8am-5pm, with one hour for lunch.

About this Position

Animal Husbandry - Perform daily animal husbandry related tasks for all animal species maintained by Animal Resources, including but not limited to: feeding/watering animals, cleaning of animal cages/pens/rooms/equipment, and maintaining animal housing/census records. Animal Health - Performs daily animal health/veterinary care tasks as directed, including but not limited to: daily monitoring of animal health status and reporting, collecting diagnostic samples/specimens, administering prescribed medications/treatments and maintaining veterinary health records. Research Support - Provides research support to OSU investigators as required, including but not limited to: transporting animals, weighing animals, and collecting samples/specimens. Facility Maintenance - Performs general animal facility custodial and maintenance tasks as directed, including but not limited to: general housekeeping of all animal facility support areas, and performing scheduled equipment preventive maintenance.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Animal Care Associate - High school/GED and no previous experience required. Valid driver's license. Successfully pass enhanced background check and the Personnel Suitability Assessment for enrollment into the Federal Select Agent Program. Ability to pass respirator fit testing.

    Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician - High school/GED and no previous experience required. Valid driver's license. Successfully pass enhanced background check and the Personnel Suitability Assessment for enrollment into the Federal Select Agent Program. Ability to pass respirator fit testing. Basic proficiency in animal care as demonstrated by certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)

    Laboratory Animal Technician - High school/GED and no previous experience required. Valid driver's license. Successfully pass enhanced background check and the Personnel Suitability Assessment for enrollment into the Federal Select Agent Program. Ability to pass respirator fit testing. Intermediate proficiency in animal care as demonstrated by certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

    Laboratory Animal Technologist - High school/GED and no previous experience required. Valid driver's license. Successfully pass enhanced background check and the Personnel Suitability Assessment for enrollment into the Federal Select Agent Program. Ability to pass respirator fit testing. Advanced proficiency in animal care as demonstrated by certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)

    Laboratory Animal Supervisor - High school/GED and  two years of experience working in laboratory environment beyond that required for certification. Valid driver's license. Successfully pass enhanced background check and the Personnel Suitability Assessment for enrollment into the Federal Select Agent Program. Ability to pass respirator fit testing. Advanced proficiency in animal care as demonstrated by certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Completion of OSU Training Services Leadership Development Program required after hire.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Position involves exposure to dust and animal dander/allergens, and may be aggravating to persons suffering from allergies. This position is also heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally. Must be able to pass respirator fit test.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in animal care.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses: Certification of Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
