About this Position

The Alarm Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing fire alarm and burglar systems in various settings, such as residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Responsibilities include conducting inspections and tests to ensure safety, reliability, and proper functioning of alarm systems, as well as identifying and troubleshooting any issues to promptly resolve them. Routine maintenance tasks, such as checking batteries and cleaning detectors, are also part of the role. The position involves performing repair work on university fire and security systems, along with minor programming for various fire and security systems. Scheduled maintenance on fire alarms, security alarms, and fire sprinkler systems is required, as well as regular alarm testing, troubleshooting, and necessary repairs. Duties also include the visual and auditory inspection of fire alarm devices and testing smoke detectors, heat detectors, fire alarm panels, and field components.
Additionally, candidates will respond to alarm activations as needed and collaborate with other technicians and clients on repair projects. The role requires effective communication and cooperation with supervisors, co-workers, and clients, following supervisors’ directions, and preparing accurate reports and records on maintenance and repair work performed on alarm systems, all while maintaining a disruption-free workplace. The Alarm Technician is required to be on rotating standby for emergencies and/or any other event after 4:30 p.m. On weekdays, weekends, and holidays. The employee in this position is required to work overtime when work requires. The employee in this position is required to work shift work when work can’t be accomplished during regular hours and when the management staff deems it necessary.
Appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment), gloves, safety glasses, etc. are provided for use in the workplace. Must adhere to all safety requirements and promote work safety.

Required Qualifications

  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Tech I – One year of related experience; or Vocational/Technical degree
    Tech II – Two years of related experience; or vocational/Technical degree and one year experience
    Tech III – Three years of related experience; or vocational/technical degree and two years of experience One year of related experience; or Vocational/Technical degree

  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

    Have before hire and maintain after hire, a valid driver’s license. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned.

    Tech III – NICET Level 1 Certification.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Basic mechanical ability and skills, basic electrical knowledge and electronic skills, ability to get along with others, basic report writing ability. Must be able to pass respirator fit test.

    Ability to become proficient in the use of “AiM” Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

    Must work safely and promote a safe work environment.

    Tech II – Working knowledge of NFPA fire alarm codes and how to install systems to meet the codes. Knowledge of various materials that be used to meet all codes. Working knowledge of fire suppression systems.

    Tech III – Ability to work on Simplex and Notifier fire alarm and security systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational/Technical

    Safety Technology or Basic Electronics

  • Two years of alarm installation experience OR

    Vocational/technical degree and one (1) year of alarm installation or repair experience.

    Ability to work on Simplex, Notifier, Siemens fire alarm and security systems.
