About this Position

To develop in each student the skills of critical thinking and to help students learn the subject matter presented to them in order for that student to become a positive member of the community. To serve as an instructor for the Municipal Fire Protection degree program. Continuous assignment based on program need and funding availability.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Maintain student and course records with updates on the learning management system.
  2. Maintain and file current course outlines, objectives and grading procedures for all courses.
  3. Exhibit innovative and adaptive instructional methods.
  4. Completes all mandatory training.
  5. Fulfill all requirements as noted in the Adjunct Handbook.
  6. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's

    Associate degree in related field. (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)

  • Minimum three years with a fire department.

Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

  • Firefighter I, Hazardous Material Operations.

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

  • Knowledge in fire department operations, management, and leadership functions.
  • Ability to update curriculum to meet changing trends in the fire service.
  • Ability to present material in the traditional or online classroom environment.
  • Ability to conduct formative and summative assessment of student learning.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive learning environment, displaying and requiring professionalism in all classroom activities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with fire department representatives on meeting program goals and learning outcomes.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically, clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing to exchange information, give/receive instructions and respond to inquiries appropriately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sensitivity to a multicultural environment in an effort to work and communicate effectively with all students, faculty, staff and community partners.
  • High degree of initiative to work independently and also collaborate in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office technologies including but not limited to: office computers, fax machines, scanners, internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Passion for assisting customers and representing the OSU-OKC and OSU brand with positivity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated history of ethical and professional behavior.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's

Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:

  • Fire Instructor I & II, Executive Fire Officer, Fire Officer designation.

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

  • Previous teaching or training officer experience.
Working Conditions:
• Office and laboratory environment.
• Must be able to work flexible hours to include some nights and weekends.
• Work will be performed in an office environment with a significant amount of public contact, in person, by telephone, via email, and various communication platforms.
 
Physical Requirements:
• Instructor will perform duties inside structures or in laboratory simulations.
• Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting up to 75 lbs. unassisted, bending, standing, climbing or walking. Any items weighting more than 45 lbs. must be team lifted per OSU safety regulations.
• Duties require extended periods of sitting, talking and listening.
• Duties require extensive use of computers, telephone and other office equipment.
• Must be able to handle and safely dispose of solutions and any hazardous materials wearing appropriate PPE.
