Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Academic Advisor I (non-exempt): Bachelor's degree and 0-2 years experience.

    Academic Advisor II (exempt):  Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years experience.

    Academic Advisor III (exempt): Master's degree and 1-3 years experience.

    Senior Academic Advisor I (exempt): Master's degree, 3 years experience.

    Senior Academic Advisor II (exempt): Master's degree, 5 years experience.

    A master’s degree may be substituted for up to three (3) years of required experience. Terminal degrees may warrant adjustment to years of experience equivalency.

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Knowledge & Technical Skills: Ability to maintain accurate, confidential student records and ensure documentation integrity.

    Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex information clearly and support students in decision making; Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff; Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and maintain positive working relationships.

    Advising & Student Support Skills: Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with the student population, applying inclusive and culturally responsive advising practices.

    Analytical & Problem-Solving: Ability to assess student needs, interpret data, and identify appropriate interventions or resources.

    Organizational & Professional Skills: Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy under pressure; Positive, proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's

    Social Sciences, Education, Counseling, Business

  • At least two years of advising experience and/or higher education experience

  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

    Knowledge & Technical Skills

    Strong knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, curricula, and course prerequisites, including the ability to interpret academic records and placement information.

    Understanding of university academic policies, procedures, and regulations, particularly those related to graduation, enrollment, and transfer credit.

    Proficiency with advising technologies and student information systems, and ability to use data to track student progress and inform advising decisions.

    Advising, Counseling & Student Support Skills

    • Ability to provide academic counseling and developmental guidance, including support related to course selection, goal setting, career exploration, and academic challenges.
    • Skill in identifying and supporting at-risk students, providing proactive outreach, referrals, and follow-up to promote persistence.

    Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills

    • Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills to address academic issues, evaluate petitions, and support decision making.

    Organizational & Professional Skills

    • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying current with advising and higher education best practices.
